Adult Dependent Relatives under the BN(O) Route
The BN(O) visa route allows eligible Adult Dependent Relatives (ADRs) to join a BN(O) status holder in the UK, but only under exceptional and compassionate circumstances. This pathway is intended for individuals who are genuinely dependent on the BN(O) status holder for long-term personal care and support that cannot reasonably be provided in their home country.
Who Qualifies as an Adult Dependent Relative?
An Adult Dependent Relative is typically:
- A parent, grandparent, sibling, or adult child of a BN(O) status holder or their partner
- Aged 18 or over
- Solely or mainly dependent on the BN(O) status holder for long-term personal care due to illness, disability, or age
- Unable to obtain the necessary level of care in their home country, even with financial or practical help
To apply under this route, you must demonstrate:
- A close family relationship with the BN(O) status holder or their partner
- A genuine need for long-term personal care due to illness, disability, or age-related condition
- That appropriate care is not available or affordable in your home country
- The BN(O) status holder is willing and able to provide care and support in the UK
- You will live with the BN(O) status holder upon arriving in the UK
Applications are strictly assessed and require strong supporting evidence, particularly medical and social care documentation.
Visa Length and Settlement
- If granted, the visa is typically issued for 2.5 years or 5 years, aligned with the BN(O) status holder’s visa duration.
- You may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years of continuous residence, provided:
- You remain dependent on and living with the BN(O) status holder
- You meet all visa conditions and UK residence requirements (e.g., no more than 180 days’ absence per 12 months)
If your application is successful, your visa will be granted with the following conditions:
- No access to public funds – You cannot claim most benefits or receive financial assistance from the UK government.
- Work is permitted, with restrictions – You may work, including self-employment and voluntary roles. However, you cannot be employed as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.
- Study is permitted, with conditions – You may study in the UK. Some subjects may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.
