Recent UK immigration reforms set out in the Restoring Control over the Immigration System signal a major shift in how migrants live, work, and settle in the UK. The government’s stated goals are to reduce net migration and move the immigration system fully online through digital status checks and authorisations.
— Important note for Hong Kong BN(O) visa holders: —
The proposed changes to extend the standard settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) qualifying period from 5 years to 10 years do not apply to the Hong Kong BN(O) route. BN(O) visa holders will continue to follow their existing pathway to settlement and citizenship, and their route remains unchanged under the current proposals.
Below is a breakdown of the key UK visa changes expected across 2025 and 2026.
- Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) Overhaul
Qualifying Period Extension
The standard wait for settlement is proposed to increase from 5 to 10 years for many visa categories, including Skilled Worker visas.
“Earned Settlement” Model (from 2026)
Settlement timelines may become linked to salary levels. High earners (over £50,270) could qualify in 5 years, while others may face significantly longer waits.
Restricted Access to Public Funds
Even after obtaining settlement, some migrants may continue to face limits on accessing public funds, with full welfare entitlements potentially reserved for British citizens.
2. Skilled Worker & Work Visa Changes
Job Eligibility Tightened
From July 22, 2025, around 120 medium-skilled roles were removed from the sponsorship list. Sponsorship is now largely restricted to degree-level occupations.
Higher English Language Requirement
From January 8, 2026, applicants for Skilled Worker and High Potential Individual visas must meet B2 English level, up from the previous B1 requirement.
Social Care Recruitment Phased Out
Overseas recruitment for social care roles was phased out in mid-2025.
Higher Employer Costs
The Immigration Skills Charge increased by 32% in late 2025, significantly raising the cost of sponsorship for UK employers.
3. Student & Graduate Visa Updates
Graduate Visa Shortened
For applications made on or after January 1, 2027, the Graduate visa will be reduced from 2 years to 18 months (PhD graduates remain at 3 years).
Increased Maintenance Requirements
Since November 2025, students must show higher monthly funds:
£1,529 per month for those studying in London
£1,136 per month for those studying outside London
4. Digital Transition & Travel (eVisas & ETA)
End of Physical Documents
The UK has moved to a fully digital eVisa system. Physical BRPs are being phased out, and migrants must now view and prove their status through a UKVI online account.
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
The ETA scheme is expanding to include EU and EEA nationals. By early 2026, all non-visa national visitors will need advanced digital authorisation before travelling to the UK.
5. Family & Spouse Visas
Settlement Timeline Remains at 5 Years
Unlike work routes, partners of British citizens are expected to remain eligible for settlement after 5 years.
Minimum Income Requirement
The current minimum income threshold to sponsor a partner remains at £29,000.
