The UK Home Office has announced an extension of the transition period to eVisa accounts until 1 June 2025, ensuring that individuals holding Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) or EUSS Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) can continue using their expired documents for international travel until that date.
As part of the UK’s move towards a fully digital immigration system, over 4 million UK visa holders have successfully created a UKVI account to access their eVisa. However, an estimated 600,000 individuals still need to complete this process.
Those who have not yet switched to their eVisa are encouraged to create their UKVI account as soon as possible. The account allows individuals to access and prove their immigration status digitally.
To support a smooth transition to eVisas, the Home Office has extended the grace period that allows individuals holding BRPs & BRCs which expired on 31 December 2024 to continue using them for travel provided their visa is still standing.
Previously, this transitional measure was set to end on 31 March 2025, but it has now been extended until 1 June 2025.
What does this mean?
- If your BRP/BRC expired on or after 31 December 2024, you can still use it for international travel until 1 June 2025.
- From 2 June 2025 onwards, expired BRPs & BRCs will no longer be accepted as proof of immigration status when entering the UK.
To avoid any travel disruptions, individuals should ensure they have linked their current passport or travel document to their eVisa before traveling.
Migrants in the UK are strongly advised to complete their transition to eVisas as soon as possible. While the grace period has been extended, those who have not yet created their UKVI account should do so immediately to ensure continued access to their immigration status.
