There was a significant amendment on the student visa in early September 2020 and effective from 1 December 2020. Some major updates are:
- The requirement on electronic bank statements are simplified that stamps on every page is no longer needed.
- Maintenance requirement increases from £1,265 to £1,334 each month inside London and from £1,015 to £1,023 outside London.
- If students or their dependants have permission to work, they are allowed to work as a postgraduate doctor or dentist in training.
- New forms are available for EEA nationals and their dependants with a chipped passport.
- Parents don’t require to renew visa every 12 months and will be granted the same length of leave to remain in the UK as the child before the age of 12 of the child under the new Appendix Parent of a Child Student.
A Short-term Student (English language) route is also introduced to replace the current one. Under the new route, people over 16 who want to study an English language course for 6 to 11 months at an accredited institution will be granted a leave to remain if requirements are fulfilled.
For studies between 30 days and six months, students can apply visitor visa instead because the study right of visitors is released, however, the requirements for the two visas are quite different, mainly on the financial requirements. Besides, both visitor visa and Short-term Student visa applicants need to show evidence that they will return home afterwards and cannot switch to Student Visa.
