Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that the UK would extend immigration rights for those in Hong Kong with British National Overseas (BNO) status. This move is made following China’s new Security Law which was imposed.
Following the Prime Minister’s speech, Dominic Raab, First Secretary of State spoke further about the pathway to UK citizenship. It is understood that a BNO passport holder will be granted limited leave to remain for five years, during which they can work or study. They will then be eligible to apply for “ Settled Status” and will be eligible to apply for British Citizenship after 12 months.
This is a “special, bespoke arrangements” to honour the UK’s “historic commitment to the people of Hong Kong”.
It is recommended for eligible people to apply for their BNO passport or to renew it as soon as it’s conveniently to do so.
This is a developing matter and we will continue to update as progressed.
